うたかた花火 (Utakata Hanabi) Lyrics

Update. Also posted here. I think there’s something weird going on with my Blogspot blog, so working on a couple of kinks first. Anyway, I’ll stick this one here too.

supercell’s new single! Didn’t know it was a Naruto ED until I found the song, hehe. And here are lyrics! There are a few Japanese terms I decided to leave in for effect, which I explain below. Also, Utakata Hanabi means “Ephemeral Fireworks.” Short-lived, like a relationship, hmm.

English:

The festival at the end of August flooded with people
wearing yukata and geta,*
making sounds of click-clack ring.
As the fireworks suddenly went off, we looked up,
and I stole a glance at your enraptured face.

I wish I could hate you.
But during days like today, I will surely
once again remember these memories.

I wish I never knew these feelings.
Yet even though we cannot meet again,
I want to see you. I want to see you.
Even now, I think of the summer days when you were here.

As we sat and rested on the roadside,
we could hear the sound of the ohayashi* far away,
the fluttering echo.
Giant brocade crowns bloom in the night sky.
As summer ends soon,
I suddenly feel sad.

My upside down heart jumped up
as we both laughed “ahaha.”
“I love you.”
And we kissed.

I want to forget everything about you.
As it is, I’m’ still sad.
Why did I ever meet you?
If I close my eyes,
I can feel like you are there even now.

With a sweet sigh,
I feverishly fell in love with you-
That voice, those eyes-
Even though when I realized it, the time had already passed,
I still search for your face.

As I look up at the fireworks by myself,
my heart prickles in pain.
Soon, the next season
will be here.
The ephemeral fireworks I watched with you-
Even now, I think of that summer day.

*A yukata is a light summer kimono (I assume you know what that is). Geta are those wooden clogs or sandals they wear. An ohayashi is a traditional Japanese band.

  1. I’ve seen “utakata” translated as “water bubble” rather than ephemeral. Is it an adjective that carries the connotation of short-lived, like a water bubble?

    • Yes, it refers to the characteristic of a water bubble. In any case, “ephemeral” sounds better, don’t you think?

      • Ephemeral sounds good, but I like having the connotation with water bubbles, like what the fireworks looked like.

Either way, I love the lyrics. Though it feels a bit too similar to Supercell’s most recent hits i.e. When the First Love Ends, The Story You Don’t Know, and Sayonara Memories. The messages are slightly different, but the underlying theme is pretty much the same.

    • I’m not sure, but I just wanted to point out something random…Utakata is the name of a character on the anime Naruto, and I find the fact that his name means “Water Bubble” funny because he uses bubble to attack xD

  2. Agree^^

  3. […] English translate from here […]

  4. I did a Bulgarian translation using your Enlgish translation 🙂

    Чезнещи фойерверки (Utakata Hanabi, うたかた花火)

  5. U all talk about the transation….
And not talk about the SONG

it pains/reminds/awards those who had fond memories of a certain loved ones:

    ふいにあがった花火を二人で見上げた時
君のこと嫌いになれたらいいのに nagi expressed it like a sigh
もう忘れよう 君のこと全部 (why forget such fond memories?)
    こんなにも悲しくて
    どうして出会ってしまったんだろう
    目を閉じれば
今も君がそこにいるようで (who is this to u?)

  6. […] Hanabi (Literally Water Bubble Fireworks, though kumoriha translates it as Ephemeral Fireworks in his translation. I prefer Bubble-Like Fireworks, personally), was released last week on August 25. The title track, […]

  7. thanks for translating this, does anyone know a website that translates japanese words not the charaters?

  8. UTAKA HANABI NARUTO SHIPPUDEN VERSION
    is the best
sakura is in the video =P

  9. Thanks for a full translation, was looking for it for a while, even though ive seen many variations on the translating of the verses found in the ending.

The song definetly seems to refer to broken love and painfull memories. Of how even after it brings us pain to think of someone, we still dont entirely let go. And in that sense, one could argue that it is one of the better descriptions of what you might refer to as “true love”, in the sense that its not just something that passes away once something bad happens, because there is just something about that person that you cant let go of.

*shrug* some might call it weak and pathetic, i find it sweet and beautifull, even though the song opens a lot of old scars, like the one described in it.

The melody also has a good flow to it, it stays the course without becoming outright monotonous, having enough variations to mix it up a bit.
