Random Tangents

If people tell you to run a tournament, decline. It’s a hell lot of work, especially when other people repeatedly make mistakes. Oh, and the players too. They can’t read. At all.

Neither can their freaking parents.

Which was okay (or rather, I didn’t know much about it) until I actually took over part of handling them. PR sucks.

Anyway, after spending 2-3 hours fixing up a spreadsheet for the next round as quickly as I could, since the original wrong spreadsheet was already posted for some reason, I went on KGS. What started as a discussion about a teaching game my friend was giving quickly turned into otaku talk.

I don’t really remember how it happened, but we somehow went from tesujis and weak shape to Lucky Star, Black Rock Shooter, Haruhi, and Kaiba shachou. Yeah. Some guy came in…and quickly left.

Isn’t it great how Go can help you make friends?

Random Japanese Word of the Day:
手筋(tesuji) – A skillful or clever play in Go. I guess you can use it out of context too, but I don’t know if many people will understand.

Go Tournament Success!

The 2nd annual Go club tournament finished tonight. We had lots of fun destroying Tracy’s house and failing at ping-pong afterwards. Also, I managed to deplete myself of money to replace the gift cards with cash prizes. Anyone want to buy 2 $15 McDonald’s gift cards? I don’t eat junk food…

As to why the Senjougahara picture above? I dunno, but she’s awesome.

Also, 100(!!) chapters of Hayate the Combat Butler got uploaded to Onemanga the other day, which I read instead of studied for my physics test today. Which is why I probably got a B…crap. Anyway, things got pretty crazy. Hayate is great. And so is Hinagiku.

Tsundereee~ Yeah, Hinagiku is one of the few female anime characters I actually like. Actually, besides her and Senjougahara…hmm…
Anime females are pretty bland, yeah.

Random Japanese Word of the Day:
ふざける(fuzakeru) – to mess around, to joke. You hear ふざけるな!(fuzakeruna!) a lot in Japanese media, which means anywhere from “don’t mess around!” to “don’t fuck with me, you asshole!” depending on context.

Rain is good. Walking home with ridiculously thin pants and an absorbant sweater in a downpour, not so much.

It occurs to me that people usually blog about a bunch of random crap that makes no sense (…*cough*…) and/or their hobbies. And while I have overemphasized Nico Nico Douga and Japanese culture in general in a very focused and small sighted way, I have not yet mentioned anything about my other hobbies. No, not that kind.

So, Go. The game of Go, that is. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon Hikaru no Go and here I am, still 4 kyu and sucking majorly. I did manage to meet a bunch of nice people, although sadly not in person. New friends are always good, however, because I am always in need of replacing old ones. Anyway, Go/Igo/Weiqi/Baduk/M&M’s is a great board game. I encourage everybody to play it because I’m sure it made me a better thinker. In all seriousness. And a study had results that people who played Go scored higher on math tests than people who didn’t. So Alyce, you should play go too. Play Go = Higher Math grades = More free time = More obsessing over whatever.

Go Congress this summer. Would like to go, but may not have time and/or money. Well, hopefully I can go to Japan or China.

Random Japanese Word of the Day:
馬鹿(baka) – I’m sure you all know this already, but it means “stupid”, “idiot”, or anything along those lines as an adjective and noun. At least you can see how annoying it is to write the kanji now.
