Mahjong

Posted in Life with tags , , on May 17, 2010 by kumoriha

Lately I’ve been getting re-addicted to Mahjong. I blame that on my decision to watch Akagi.
Luckily, I found Touhou Unreal Mahjong, which is Japanese Riichi Mahjong, although each character has some ability to break the game. “Screw the rules, I’m a moe-ful Touhou character,” or something like that.
Anyway, the thing that gets me about Riichi Mahjong is that, unlike when I play Hong Kong rules, not all hands can be played. Each hand has to have 1 fan or something (I forget), so oftentimes I think I’m about to win, draw the tile…and there’s no win option.
Well, hopefully I’ll be able to learn the rules soon enough.

Also, 「丼みたい」ってワワワウェタ.

Random Japanese Word of the Day:
丼(donburi/-don) – a donburi is a rice bowl. Basically, you have a topping on a bowl of rice. Like 牛丼(gyudon/beef bowl), カツ丼(katsudon/fried pork cutlet bowl), and 親子丼(oyakodon/”mother-child bowl” consisting of chicken and egg). Very yummy.

Garage Sales

So today I experienced a garage sale for the first time. Very interesting.
Mother woke me up saying, “Hurry up, people are coming to clean. Also, the Japanese people across the street are having a garage sale.”
So we had a look. For some reason, my father gave me $1xx.xx, which I’m sure could have bought every freaking thing there. There was quite a bit of random stuff. I got a nice mug (I’ve been wanting a mug for some time), a tie (been wanting one that doesn’t suck), and 2 Japanese books (some random 1st grade storybook and a Pokemon dictionary). For $4.75. By the way, the books together cost 75 cents. The Pokemon dictionary itself had a retail price of 980 yen.

Yeah.

I love garage sales.

…Although, I really should have picked up a couple of stuffed animals. There were quite a few. Perhaps next time.
ガラージセール最高!

And no, Black Rock Shooter (which got delayed to summer and became an OVA…) has nothing to do with anything.
Random Japanese Word of the Day:
凄い(sugoi) – Wow!, Amazing!, OHMYEFFINGHARUHI. Very, very common adjective. As with anything, it turns into a drawling すげえ(sugee) in slang, where it can be drawn out as long as you want to for emphasis. For even more emphasis, you can go with すっげええ(suggeee…).

Hikaru no Go

Don’t you hate having work and then going off to eat a meal? I never feel like working with a full stomach…time to digest my curry rice.

I recently found out that the Hikaru no Go manga has furigana in it, so I search around for the raw version. Well, I did manage to make sense out of most of it, but after reading about 30 pages, I got tired. But yeah, if anyone is looking for some manga with furigana, Hikaru no Go is great. Although there are those go terms that you probably won’t understand.

(Subtly spreading interest in go, thereby encouraging people to join Go Club)

Now, how long will it take for my Japanese Slang book to get here…
